Online ordering is a new profit solution for a growing
number of retail bakeries. Using BakeSmart bakery software from LegacyUSA,
LLC, retailers like Crawfords Bakery in Indianapolis, IN, and The
Ambrosia Bakery in Baton Rouge, LA, are enjoying instant success rolling
out online ordering systems that enable customers to shop their stores
in cyberspace – anytime and anywhere.
"It’s been great for us, and it’s extremely convenient
for the end user. They can shop for our cakes whenever they want,"
says Felix Sherman Jr. of Ambrosia Bakery. "Another thing is that
all orders are prepaid."
Sherman says a recent customer placed a large cake order one month in
advance. Talk about money in the bank.

Rick
Crawford of Crawfords Bakery calls BakeSmart
Online Ordering "heaven on earth."
"It’s just a little money maker. I love online ordering,"
he says. "People tend to spend more money on online orders, and I
have yet to have someone have a problem with an online cake order."
One reason people don’t complain is likely that online ordering
puts the onus on the customer for giving the right information in the
first place. They choose the cake size and colors. They pick the filling
and icing. They type in the message to be written on the cake. So if something
goes wrong, they made the mistake, not the bakery employee who would have
taken their order if it had been over the phone.
Crawfords Bakery launched online cake ordering on its website 18 months
ago. Now Crawford says he plans to lower his prices for cakes that are
ordered online. Why? Online customers are not taking up employee’s
time. This is similar to how the airlines offer lower prices for tickets
purchased online.
"I’ll do lower prices online, probably 12 percent less,"
Crawford says. "I’ll raise my prices in the store by 6 percent
and then discount it by 12 percent for online orders."
Launched in November, Ambrosia offers online ordering for breads, cookies,
cakes, pastries, pies and other baked goods, primarily for instore pickup.
Shipping is available for online orders of 8-inch round cakes or King
Cakes.
"The order accuracy is very good," Sherman says.
"The guys at BakeSmart have gone above
and beyond the call of duty to make sure everything is working for us."
BakeSmartOnline (www.bakesmart.net)
is an e-commerce solution that integrates seamlessly with BakeSmart bakery
software, according to BakeSmart. It allows you to transform your bakery’s
website into an online store, and you receive email notification once
each order is placed. With one click, online orders are downloaded into
BakeSmart.
BakeSmart Online even works if you are not using BakeSmart Software
because it works as a fully functional, stand-alone online shopping cart,
according to BakeSmart.
"This is the wave of the future," says Ray Clements, founder
and CEO of LegacyUSA.
"The baking industry is just getting started into the new millennium
and we’re here to help them move forward."
